~~Review by Bonnie~~
I walked into this third book of the de Vincent series, not having read books one and two, something I usually never do. The blurb sounded so enticing, that I knew I had to give it a shot. Rosie Herpin has been widowed ten years, after losing her beloved husband, Ian, to suicide. They were high school sweethearts, who married right after graduation, and were wildly in love. Ian never revealed his secret pain and depression, which left a devastated Rosie wondering if there was anything she should have seen or could have done. She has dated, but no man has ever come close to making her feel what Ian did. Rosie also immersed herself in school, acquiring three degrees along the way. Yet, she has not put those degrees to use, working part-time at her parents’ bakery and part-time as a ghost hunter. While visiting Ian’s grave, she unexpectedly encounters local “celebrity,” Devlin de Vincent.
The de Vincent family is notorious in New Orleans for many reasons. They are handsome, wealthy beyond belief, and steeped in rumors of murder, suicide, and curses. When an attack on Rosie’s friend, Nikki, has ties to the de Vincent family, Devlin’s meeting with Rosie is anything but cordial. The sparks fly as they immediately begin to hurl insults and digs at each other, no doubt to cover the incendiary attraction they both feel. Their paths seem destined to cross time and time again, as they vacillate between tearing each other’s clothes off and ripping each other’s throat out.
There is never a dull moment in MOONLIGHT SCANDALS. Every time Devlin begins to trust Rosie, she says or does something that makes him suspicious that she’s trying to find his family secrets — and there is so much that is going on with that family. Devlin is a hard and very private man who is living a life distant from everyone in order to protect his brothers. He’s used to fear and respect from others, but Rosie is not afraid to stand up to him, and she will not give respect where she doesn’t get it. Devlin’s physical reaction to Rosie is beyond anything he’s experienced, and he dislikes not feeling in control. Devlin is the first man to make Rosie feel so much since Ian, but she’s not about to be a doormat.
Along with the hot and cold romance between Devlin and Rosie, there are ghosts, mediums, murder, intrigue, and plenty of twists and turns. I was enthralled by this book, finishing it in one day. The hero, Devlin, while having suffered much, is not an innocent, and has much darkness in his past. Yet, despite his deeds, and his over-the-top personality, I felt sympathy for him and liked him. I felt that Rosie is just the woman for him, and their love, when it finally happens, is very satisfying. I was not lost for not having read books one and two, but I am certainly intrigued enough that I immediately acquired them so that I could flesh out all the details and read the two brothers’ stories. If you like steam and intrigue in a paranormal story, I highly recommend this entertaining roller coaster ride.
