Tis the Season of love and hope, spies and intrigue!
A Christmas house party becomes a covert operation to trap a French spy. Can the Honorable John Bonnington protect his wife from their guest’s murderous intentions? Can Abbie Bonnington protect her husband from his ex-mistress’ intentions to seduce him into revealing Crown secrets? Can Abbie and Jack continue the charade of hosting the perfect holiday party as danger, treachery, and treason swirl in the ballroom?
Enjoy the passionate, suspenseful Regency world of the Code Breakers, where daring lords and ladies decode the path to happily ever amidst their dangerous, heroic fight against Napoleon’s treacherous designs.
The Honorable Jack Bonnington gently steered his wife toward a narrow path in the woods. He had plans for a sensual detour before their meeting with Rathbourne, England’s Spy Master, who had summoned them for an urgent meeting.
Jack worried that he might be sent away from his bride to Dover. He didn’t want to be separated from Abbie. It was frightening how vital she had become to him in the scant two months of their marriage. Despite feasting on every luscious inch of Abbie this morning, he needed more. He had never before understood the power of obsession, never felt its ferocious pull until now.
“Jack, where are we going?” Abbie stopped and looked up at him. Her bright eyes were the same color as her sky-blue pelisse.
Aware of the manner in which his bride dug her heels into the damp path, Jack pulled Abbie into his arms. He knew how to change his stubborn wife’s mind.
He brushed his lips over hers before coaxing her to open his mouth. The taste of Abbie sent his nerves humming his favorite melody.
“Don’t you want to visit our “special place” this morning?” The forester’s hut deep into the woods had become Jack’s favorite place since Abbie’s innocent seduction before their marriage. His Christmas present was to rebuild the dilapidated hut into a secret hide away from his rambunctious brothers and his father who resided with them.
“Jack, in case you haven’t noticed, it’s winter.”
Of course, he and Abbie had made great use of “their special place” during their daily summer journey between estates in St. John’s Woods on the outskirts of London. Not over the terror of Abbie’s kidnapping by a French spy, Jack escorted her every day to Rathbourne estate. He wasn’t sure if he would ever again allow his wife to make the fifteen-minute walk with only Ford as her body guard. Her secret intelligence work put her at great risk. Jack swallowed the acid taste of fear at the thought of losing Abbie. And if he were assigned to Dover, who would protect his wife?

A Stuffy Viscount
From the beginning of Viscount Chevers’ journey to London, he is beleaguered. His swollen head is the size of Wellington’s army and pounding as loudly as troops marching. His erstwhile fiancée has proven fickle, inviting him to renew his addresses, but his fellow traveler is a saucy schoolteacher whose smile can cast out the shadows from his life. Their social spheres are worlds apart, but in a sedate English inn he and Miss Rutherford are forced to pose as a married couple. It’s a temporary alliance, so how will Edward convince Ruthanne to make it permanent?
An Irreverent Schoolteacher
Ruthanne Rutherford, respectable schoolteacher, is no rule breaker, but her tender heart cannot ignore the debt of gratitude she owes Lord Chevers. Posing as his wife allows her to nurse his injury, but her heart is foolish enough to want the façade to become real. As a practical girl, she knows their blossoming friendship cannot live outside the Rose & Crown, but that doesn’t prevent her from yearning for Edward’s touch. How far will she carry the pretense of being happily wedded to this viscount?
They remained quiet as they traversed from the inn and through a nearby copse of trees. The long stroll allowed her to regain her composure. When she thought the silence would become unbearable, he gently asked, “What do you want, Ruthanne?”
Her heart’s reply was swift. You. I want you. She couldn’t give that answer—it was laughably presumptuous. Not even her courage was up to jumping that particular fence.
“I don’t know,” she prevaricated.
“Ruthanne? Where have you gone?”
She glanced at him.
“Don’t be sad, my dear.”
“But I am sad.”
At the sound of her broken voice, he pulled her into his arms. “Don’t be. I can bear anything save that.”
Startled, she raised her face to find Edward’s mouth close to hers. Their lips met and Ruthanne could have wept at his tenderness.
After a while, she rested her cheek against his shoulder and whispered, “You asked me what I want, but I can only tell you what I don’t want.”
He hugged her closer. “Fine. What don’t you want?”
“I don’t want to lose your friendship.”
“You won’t.”
Ruthanne stared as if he were mad. “How can you promise that? And don’t you dare laugh!”
Edward grinned.
“Once we reach London, we’ll go our separate ways. I’ll return to teaching at the academy. You’ll be off doing whatever it is that viscounts do.”
He caught her hand, chuckling. “When do you wish to return to Dover?”
“Have you heard nothing I’ve said?”
“More than what you’ve said, Ruthanne, I heard what you didn’t say.”
She snatched her hand away. “You are the most vexatious man I’ve ever met!”
“Yes, dear.”
“Don’t patronize me! It isn’t at all gentlemanly.”
“Yes, dear.”
“And here I thought you were well-mannered.”
“Oh, no. Never that.” He tutted.
