Joanna Shupe returns with another unforgettable novel set in the glittering world of New York City’s Gilded Age…
They call her Lady Unlucky…
With three dead fiancés, Lady Eva Hyde has positively no luck when it comes to love. She sets sail for New York City, determined that nothing will deter her dream of becoming an architect, certainly not an unexpected passionate shipboard encounter with a mysterious stranger. But Eva’s misfortune strikes once more when she discovers the stranger who swept her off her feet is none other than her new employer.
Or is it Lady Irresistible?
Phillip Mansfield reluctantly agrees to let the fiery Lady Eva oversee his luxury hotel project while vowing to keep their relationship strictly professional. Yet Eva is more capable—and more alluring—than Phillip first thought, and he cannot keep from drawing up a plan of his own to seduce her.
When a series of onsite “accidents” makes it clear someone wants Lady Unlucky to earn her nickname, Phillip discovers he’s willing to do anything to protect her—even if it requires A SCANDALOUS DEAL.
“Yes…. I will.”
His nostrils flared ever so slightly.
“Why?” he asked, brows lowered in confusion. “Why now?”
She understood perfectly. A few days ago, she’d insisted on professional distance. Yet how could she explain it? They were high above the city, just the two of them, in a cocoon of warm July air. “Does it matter?”
“It does to me. I’d like to know why you’ve changed your mind.”
Because she wanted him, wanted him to do the same wicked things he’d done on the ship. The insides of her thighs grew slick just thinking on it. She went with a coy answer instead. “Isn’t that what women do?”
One side of his mouth kicked up. “Most women, perhaps. However, you’re not most women. There’s no one else who can begin to compare.”

A Scandalous Deal is the second book in The Four Hundred series by Joanna Shupe. It can easily be read as a standalone book, but I encourage you to read the first book in the series, A Daring Arrangement, if only for the fact that is is an absolutely fabulous story. Just like this one has proven to be!
Lady Eva Hyde is a budding architect, trained by her father whose building designs are coveted by many. When he falls ill with what I believe to be dementia he is unable to carry on with his work. Eva takes up the mantle, pretending the work is her father’s. She needs to do the jobs in order to earn the money to sort out the terrible state of the family finances. She wants nothing more than to be able to use her own name as an architect, but people want men to design their buildings, not women. Besides after losing three fiances to death Eva is known as Lady Unlucky, and nobody wants to rely on a person known to be bad luck.
Philip Mansfield, a rich American has paid over the odds for Eva’s father to plan and oversee the construction of what he hopes to be the best hotel in New York. When Eva turns up in his office saying that her father is a little under the weather and couldn’t travel from England just yet, he begrudgingly allows her to act in his place. She doesn’t tell him that her father would never be travelling and that the hotel designs are hers. She hopes to prove herself first and then to tell him the truth when he is satisfied with her work.
Problems arise when the workforce at the construction site makes it clear that she isn’t welcome there. Also, some corrupt politicians make it clear that unless they get involved in the hotel and its construction they will do all in their power to shut the project down, even perhaps going to the lengths of trying to hurt Eva! All that goes down at the same time that Eva and Philip decide to have a secret affair. They have an immediate attraction to each other, but what happens when the truth comes out about who Eva is?
What I loved about this story is that although it had it’s romance, and it’s very steamy passionate scenes between Philip and Eva, there was also the corruption afoot that made the book exciting. Never knowing if the hotel would ever be finished, or if anybody was going to end up hurt. I loved the setting of the story in the Gilded Age in New York. I loved the cruise and what happened on it at the start of the book, I loved Philip’s mother, heck, I loved everything about this book. I couldn’t read it quickly enough to see how it would all work out, and I wasn’t disappointed!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers’ copy of this book.
