If you enjoy romantic suspense and the blurb intrigued you, don’t hesitate for a moment to pick up HERO’S RETURN because it is sensational!
It had started like any other day for Sheriff Flint Cahill, until human skeletal remains were discovered nearby and a package was delivered at the ranch for his brother Tucker, who had not set foot in town for nineteen years. Until that very day. News of the gruesome discovery had reached Tucker, and he could not stay away because he had never forgotten the last time he’d seen Madeline, and he suspected the remains were hers. Tucker is not the only one who needs to know about Madeline, and that’s the reason investigative reporter Kate Rothschild is also in Gilt Edge…
B.J. Daniels does not waste a minute, and from the very first page, the intrigue is firmly established, and the suspense doesn’t let up until the end. HERO’S RETURN is that sort of book that leaves you quite unhappy when life dares interfere. It’s obvious that HERO’S RETURN is not the first book in the series, yet Tucker’s return makes it easy for newcomers to feel right at home as he reconnects with his family. I never had the impression I had missed anything, and the fact that the characters are so brilliantly written also helps a lot. The secondary characters are crafted with as much care as the principals. Ms. Daniels’ stunningly vivid descriptions convey everything we need to know, concisely yet thoroughly.
I was agreeably surprised at how suspenseful HERO’S RETURN is! There are two suspense stories: the major one, and a minor one, and both are as compelling; even the lovely second romance contains a dash of mystery. The pace is steady. the writing is efficient, and smooth, and at times startlingly literate. It’s not often that I mentally ooh and aah over the prose in a contemporary romance; the dialogues also sound genuine, and the author possesses a unique ability to create a sometimes rather eerie atmosphere, which contrasts sharply with the sparkling and pristine Montana spring. There is a bit of a Hitchcockian vibe there, save for the wonderful Kate who, while needing someone to make sure she doesn’t do anything too hasty, doesn’t need rescuing. She is on a mission, but she knows what she’s doing; besides her recklessness comes with her job description.
Kate and Tucker appraise each other admiringly at first glance, but there’s a wariness to their interactions, and initially, there’s a bit of distrust because Tucker feels that Kate has a hidden agenda, which when disclosed, was only one of the many startling revelations that were to come. And this is where Ms. Daniels shines brighter than the stars: the author omits purposefully, and ever so subtly, minute details that leave you begging to know more; HERO’S RETURN is very meticulously structured, each reveal making the suspense more gripping.
The romance develops slowly; Kate and Tucker are both sensible people and are not rushing into anything for well-founded reasons. Tucker is very poised in spite of his guilt, shame and inner turmoil; he is the kind of hero I look for in romances. His conversations with Kate are so very cleverly written and sound so real that, in one instance his reaction to an outburst from Kate caught me so off-guard, I laughed out loud. I found a twist in the romance a trifle convenient, however, it fit the timeline, did not get in the way of the suspense, and I don’t think I have ever appreciated so much that the sex took place behind closed doors: I didn’t miss a thing, there were no endless pages of sexy filler, which left plenty of room for the story as such. The ending is exciting, holds quite a few unexpected twists, and every little loose end is neatly wrapped up; HERO’S RETURN is excellent!
