How to Marry a Marquess is the third book in the Wedded by Scandal series by Stacy Reid. It can easily be read as a stand alone, although as characters from the first two books are mentioned in this book it’s nice to get a continuation of their stories too.
Lady Evie Chesterfield’s parents are adamant that she marries and marries well. They keep trying to make matches for her, but she refuses them all. There is only one man she loves and would marry and that’s her brother’s friend, and somebody Evie has known for years. A man who has been let down in love before, and never wants to marry.
That man is Richard Maitland. He has lusted after Evie since she was 16 but never did anything about it as she was so young. Over the years including the ones where he was broken hearted over a failed relationship, Evie and himself have stayed in touch and are firm friends. They can be themselves with each other even though they both keep a secret from the other….that they at least have a mutual lust for the other!
When circumstances change meaning that Evie HAS to accept a proposal, she decides she wants it to be Richard that she marries. By asking him to help her with seduction techniques to help her woo a man of her choice the sparks fly. She desperately wants Richard to fall in love and offer for her especially when his circumstances change so that he needs to marry as well. Something that he swore blind he would never do, marriage has been off the cards for him since his heart was broken before.
Will Evie get her man, or will he stubbornly refuse to see that she isn’t the spoilt young miss that he believes she is? She can cope in his world, with his circumstances, she just needs to make him see that. He thinks she will be ruined if they marry and despite his feelings keeps trying to put Evie off.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. There was the perfect balance of dark and light in the story, with one of the light scenes being so funny that I, even now giggle remembering it. I won’t give spoilers, suffice to say it involves Evie taking the advice from Richard about how to put off a potential husband. The passionate scenes between our couple were well written and when Richard finally gives in to temptation and kisses Evie it’s such a great moment you just want to whoop! I love a book that can get you so involved in the story that you can’t hide your reactions. I even nearly cried as well in parts of the story, so yes this book definitely makes you run the whole gamut of emotions. I also couldn’t read it quickly enough to find out how it would end. I wasn’t disappointed!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers’ copy of this book.
