Detective Chris Downing doesn't know much about his neighbor. In the rural town of Destiny, Tennessee, Julie Webb lives a life of seclusion, rarely even offering a smile or wave. Only when Chris hears her frantic screams one night does he gain a glimpse into the life of a woman in hiding, and in saving her life, he is forced to kill her attacker. But Julie's troubles are only beginning to unravel. When Chris learns the identity of Julie's attacker, questions of trust are raised and suspicions run high. Together they will uncover the motives of a killer…and the undeniable attraction between them.

Julie Webb’s assets are frozen, she needed cheap lodgings, so Destiny Tennessee will do; at least it’s far enough away from Nashville, and Julie can make herself invisible. She has just moved in, but she couldn’t fail to notice her handsome neighbour, Detective Chris Downing, who keeps waving in a friendly manner, while she ignores him. On a lazy Saturday evening, Chris just finished hosting his first summer cookout for his work colleagues and friends, and is settling down to watch a baseball game, when he hears a scream coming from next door; he had sensed fear in the eyes of Julie, and he is about to see it confirmed…

Lena Diaz kicks off the New Year in spectacular fashion with a brand new book in her Tennessee SWAT series! Just reading about the cast of characters, a Harlequin feature at the beginning of the book, had me salivating, and the first page got me hooked right away. I had planned to read for a little while, but I ended up rearranging my schedule because I could not put MOUNTAIN WITNESS down. At all! I have been a fan of Ms. Diaz’s for quite some time, she has never disappointed me, and this book is simply fabulous! It’s exciting from the first page, and this was one of those times when I wished I knew how to speed read! Every detail that was revealed led to more questions as to who wanted to kill Julie. The story is easy to follow, but the plot is very intricate and there are many layers and players, I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next, and there are numerous plot twists, and I hadn’t seen any of them coming!

Lena Diaz establishes her characters with such clarity that I felt I knew everyone very well almost from the get-go, except Julie; she was an enigma I got to discover at the same time Chris did. Chris and Julie are exceptionally well drawn, very engaging, and both surprised me quite often. If the suspense is amazing, so is the romance. At first, neither Chris nor Julie entirely trusted each other, but they did build that fragile trust, got to know each other through candid conversations, which led to deeper sentiments but also helped uncover the mystery surrounding Julie’s situation. MOUNTAIN WITNESS is my idea of a perfectly balanced romantic suspense: breathtaking action, very fast-paced, characters that you feel you know and that you really like, and a gorgeous romance that evolves beautifully and organically. Read that first page and tell me that you are able to stop right there! Thank you, Lena Diaz for this fantastic book!

I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book.
