The events of one horrible night left Lady Abigail Langdon prisoner to a secret. A secret that would change the rest of her life. Something so important that protecting it would prevent her from loving a man she wasn’t sure she could live without.
Ethan Cambridge, second son of the late Earl of Burnhaven, left his Caribbean hideout—the home of his heart—to try and salvage the mess his brother had made of the family’s estate. Just stepping onto English soil put his life at risk, but once he met the reclusive Lady Abigail Langdon, the only home he wanted was at her side. Except, he knew she was harboring a secret that prevented her from giving him her heart.

The Secret Rose by Laura Landon is the first book I have read by this author, and it certainly won’t be my last.
The story is about Lady Abigail Landon. She has a terrible secret, actually she has more than one, which make her a virtual recluse in the country. She is content where she is, though things change after her father’s death. Unknown to her, her father knowing her secrets, wrote to Ethan Cambridge, telling him that he must speak with him. He was virtually on his death bed and needed to tell Ethan something regarding his missing brother Stephen. Abigail had been betrothed to Stephen, but two years ago the engagement was broken and he ran away. He hasn’t been heard from or seen since.
Ethan Cambridge is the second son of the Late Earl of Burnhaven. He’s more than happy with his life which he leads either at sea or in his tropical paradise home. He has had to come back to England because before Stephen disappeared he had practically run his estates and the family fortunes into ruin. Ethan has to try to stave off unhappy creditors and try to clean up the mess that Stephen has left. After receiving the missive from Abigail’s father he assumes that she might have some of the family jewels that she should part with as she isn’t marrying into the family anymore. So he makes his way to her home in the country with every intention of finding out what her father has to say, and to take back anything of value she has which will help with the debts his family finds themselves in.
Unfortunately, when Ethan arrives at the house, a funeral has just taken place, that of Abigail’s father. What was he going to tell Ethan? He is determined to find out from Abigail. That is how the two of them meet again, and where their story begins. Does she have family heirlooms to give him, what is her secret, can Ethan get either of them from her. In his attempts to do so he is putting his own life in danger because he is on the run from somebody who wants him dead. He is staying in one place too long and he knows the longer he stays the more chance there is of him being found. He keeps that in the back of his mind though because the longer he spends time with Abigail the more he starts to have feelings for her. The feeling is mutual but Abigail knows when her secrets are out that Ethan will despise her and any chance of a future together will be ruined. She must fight her attraction to him as difficult as that is.
This book is so full of intrigue and suspense, once I started it I couldn’t put it down. From the start I had a good idea what Abigail’s secrets were, but how wrong I was. Talk about a complete twist, I loved it. I also loved the brewing romance between Abigail and Ethan, and the dangers around every corner. I was totally engrossed from beginning to end.
The way the author started the book, with a complete shocker of a scene was a brilliant idea. To be captured into the storyline within the very first page of the book, to me, is the sign of a great author and a great story.
If you love a great romance story where you can’t predict anything about how things are going to turn out, then this is the book for you. I fully recommend it and I look forward to reading my next Laura Landon book.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
