The Governess’s Secret Baby is the fourth book in ‘The Governess Tales’ series by Janice Preston. I haven’t read the other books in the series, and you certainly don’t have to have read them in order to enjoy this book. BUT that said, if you do read this book first you will know the ‘happy endings’ from the other books because they are all mentioned in here.
This is the story of Grace Bertram, a recently qualified governess. She lost her parents at a young age, and she’s been a live in student learning to become a governess. During that time she thought herself in love with a young man, she fell pregnant, and the young man in question signed up for the army rather than face his responsibilities. Grace had the baby but knew she had no way of keeping her, so she let her be adopted by a very loving couple. She was devastated to have to give the baby up, and swore that when she qualified to be a governess, she would find her child to make sure she was living a happy life. The search for her baby leads her to Nathaniel, Marquess of Ravenwell.
Nathaniel is a recluse thanks to having been disfigured in a fire that took his father’s life. He lives in his home, on a dark estate that most people daren’t go to for fear of him thanks to the rumours that have gone around which he hasn’t bothered to dispel. His sister and brother in law are the adopted parents of Clara, Grace’s daughter. Sadly they were both killed in a carriage accident, and her care has fallen to Nathaniel. He has never had to look after a child before, and knows that he will have to hire a governess to help. He puts an advert in the paper, and when Grace turns up at his door he assumes she has come in reply to the ad.
She can’t believe her luck, that not only has she found her daughter, but a job is available for her where she can look after her daughter and see her grow up. She knows she has to keep who she is a secret, and she worries that Nathaniel will realise that she hadn’t even known about the Governess’s position. But living on the dark estate, with the brooding man who might just find out her secrets, is more than worth it to her. She will do anything to be with her little girl.
Nathaniel hates having another person in his home, especially a beautiful young woman who like everybody else must find his burns disgusting. He doesn’t want to even look her straight on in case the look of horror on her face proves once again how horrid he is. Clara is little, she doesn’t mind what her Uncle looks like, so at least he has her love. Can he ever find love again with an adult though, a woman like Grace maybe? He has been so lonely for so long, it’s going to take a lot for him to not be his reclusive self around her.
I really enjoyed this story, it had it’s lovely light moments, especially those including an adorable kitten, and also a goofy loveable dog. There were dark moments, emotional moments, and some wonderful passionate moments. The first proper kiss between the couple was absolutely swoon worthy, a very special moment. OK that wasn’t much of a spoiler, so you can forgive me because surely you know they at least had to have a nice smooch ha ha.
Now that I have read and enjoyed this book I will be going back and reading the others. I know the endings for them, but reading how they get to those endings I am sure will be enjoyable.
