A twist of fate . . .
Devon Ravenel, London's most wickedly charming rake, has just inherited an earldom. But his powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibilities . . . and more than a few surprises. His estate is saddled with debt, and the late earl's three innocent sisters are still occupying the house . . . along with Kathleen, Lady Trenear, a beautiful young widow whose sharp wit and determination are a match for Devon's own.
A clash of wills . . .
Kathleen knows better than to trust a ruthless scoundrel like Devon. But the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny—and from the first moment Devon holds her in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. As Kathleen finds herself yielding to his skillfully erotic seduction, only one question remains:
Can she keep from surrendering her heart to the most dangerous man she's ever known?

COLD-HEARTED RAKE by Lisa Kleypas is an exquisitely written, richly detailed portrait of an unlikely Victorian romance. Devon Ravenel recently inherited a title he never wanted, along with an estate which is literally falling apart. Devon and his younger brother West are both rakes, who have never have to lift a finger in their entire lives, except to drink, especially in West’s case. Now they are faced with having to save the earldom or lose it altogether. And to top it off, they need money. The best solution for Devon would be to marry money, but acquiring a wife is not on his list of priorities. Kathleen, Lady Trenear, also lives on the estate; she was married a very short time to his cousin Theo, and his sisters, Helen, and the twins Cassandra and Pandora also live with them.
Devon is definitely a COLD-HEARTED RAKE at the beginning, but the lovely and very proper Kathleen heats his blood. Ms. Kleypas paints a vivid portrait of a rapidly changing society, which is greatly enhanced by the richness of the historical details she provides; I felt I was living alongside Devon and Kathleen in Victorian England. Devon, I felt merely grows into a cool-hearted rake, while maybe Kathleen is a bit too genuinely Victorian to come across as passionate; I did not feel those sparks between Devon and Kathleen. However, the author’s outstanding knowledge of the era as well as her refined prose make COLD-HEARTED RAKE a captivating read. But COLD-HEARTED RAKE is more than Devon and Kathleen’s road to romance, as another couple is also on their way to their Happy-Ever-After. Ms. Kleypas writes most interesting characters, and I will admit that my favourites were West, who goes through the most startling changes, and the fabulous twins, whose stories I hope we will get to read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
